Midjourney is an independent, self-funded research lab in San Francisco that trains its own image generation models, known for their distinctive look, along with the Niji models and a video model. It offers them through its web app and Discord rather than a public API. In 2025 it signed a licensing and research deal with Meta while staying independent.
